The basic requirements for agricultural machinery gear materials are: the tooth surface should have sufficient hardness and wear resistance, and the tooth core should have sufficient toughness to prevent various failures of the tooth surface. Simultaneously, it should have good cold and hot working properties to meet various technical requirements of the gear. The performance of the gear depends on the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties that the material should possess under specified working conditions; this is the first thing to ensure when selecting materials.

Material processing properties. Manufacturing each component requires some processing steps; therefore, the ease with which the material is processed into parts directly affects the quality of the parts, production efficiency, and processing costs. Commonly used gear materials include tempered steel, quenched steel, and hardened steel. Cast steel has slightly lower strength than forged steel and is commonly used for larger gears.
